Clay and Stone
Clay and Stone or Babylon the Great and the New Jerusalem. “ For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not are the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4: 16-18.
Years ago, in a room in London, these words were read by an old gentleman. Turning to the company, he asked, “What are the unseen things?” No one answered. I thought he looked at me, but I had no reply for him. I knew the Lord Jesus was unseen, but the passage could not apply to Him. I was silent. All were silent. “I am not going to tell you,” he continued. “I leave you to consider the question.” A year or two later another Christian teacher was used of God to open up to me the answer to that question, and I am now, Young Friends, about to try, in my simple way, to picture to you what he unfolded to me from God’s Word. May the Holy Spirit of God light up these “ things which are not seen” to your view, that the “far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” may be ours; and that we may hear one day those blessed words: “Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” (Matthew 25:21).
