Description

Meditations on 2 Kings

2 Kings begins with Elijah, stern prophet of judgment, still actively on the scene in the northern 10- tribe kingdom of Israel. He is quickly succeeded, however, by Elisha, prophet of grace. A good third of our commentary follows the amazing adventures and interesting miracles of the life of this man of God who in many ways foreshadows our Lord Jesus Christ.
One after another the lives of the last twelve kings of Israel (all evil) and fifteen kings and a queen of Judah (some good most evil) come into focus before us. Rossier helps us look closely at each of them, capturing the lessons of their lives. Their is a history of failure overall, but interspersed are episodes of revival and of God`s gracious intervention on behalf of His people. History repeats itself, it had often been said; certainly there is much in the lives of these men of old for us to apply to ourselves at the end of the 20th century.
Books and articles have been written about several of the well-known kings and prophets of 2 Kings. Very few commentators, however, have gone through 2 Kings chapter by chapter, incident by incident, also bringing 2 Chronicles and the prophets to bear upon its history. Henri Rossier does this for us in his Meditations on 2 Kings, now translated into English from its original French.
